In scene 8, we see that Robin, an ostler (stablehand) and his friend Rafe have stolen a cup from a tavern. They try to run away, until the wine-maker catches them. Robin then conjures Mephastophilis and scares the wine-maker away. However, this greatly angers Mephastophilis, as they do not take him seriously and only conjured him up for a prank. This scene provides comic relief, as it is an absurd and silly situation. However, it also serves to compare and contrast the boys' character and ambitions with those of Faustus.
