The answer is vampires.  When Jonathan tries to sleep, the three women sneak into his room.  When they enter, they bear their fangs and are ready to feed on him.  He is paralyzed with fear and his cross is not with him.  He is only saved when the Count enters the room and orders the girls to leave.
