Jackie is writing a speech that claims that students should sell fruit instead of candy for the school fundraiser. in her speech, jackie wants to rebut the counterclaim that “students should sell candy like last year.” which is the best rebuttal that jackie could use in her speech? i know that we sold candy last year, but we don’t always have to sell candy every year we have a school fundraiser. we could try selling something different this year, like fruit. last year we sold several thousand dollars worth of candy, and all you students ate that candy, which is probably why you want to sell candy again this year. but i don’t think that’s a good reason. i know a lot of students want to sell candy like last year, but fruit tastes sweet too and is better for us. isn’t the country trying to encourage healthier eating these days? last year i sold a lot of candy, just like you did, and we made a lot of money for the school. but i felt guilty selling so much candy to little kids whose teeth would rot and who might have gotten sick from eating all that candy. don’t kids get enough candy as it is?

Read the passage below and answer the question that follows. ‘you make me feel uncivilized, daisy,’ i confessed on my second glass of corky but rather impressive claret. ‘can’t you talk about crops or something? ’ i meant nothing in particular by this remark but it was taken up in an unexpected way. ‘civilization’s going to pieces,’ broke out tom violently. ‘i’ve gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things. have you read ‘the rise of the coloured empires’ by this man goddard? ’ ‘why, no,’ i answered, rather surprised by his tone. ‘well, it’s a fine book, and everybody ought to read it. the idea is if we don’t look out the white race will be—will be utterly submerged. it’s all scientific stuff; it’s been proved.’ in this passage, tom’s ideas about race relations come off as uncivilized. what literary device is fitzgerald using here?

Titinius.] why didst thou send me forth, brave cassius? did i not meet thy friends, and did not they put on my brows this wreath of victory, and bid me give it thee? didst thou not hear their shouts? alas, thou hast misconstrued everything! but hold thee, take this garland on thy brow. thy brutus bid me give it thee, and i will do his bidding. brutus, come apace, and see how i regarded caius cassius. by your leave, gods,—this is a roman’s part: come, cassius’ sword, and find titinius’ heart. which theme is best expressed by the text evidence in the excerpt? a. power corrupts those who achieve it. b victory has a high cost for both sides of a conflict. c. loyalty to one's superior is more important than life. d. people in power cannot recognize success.
