When Parris first discusses the strange events with Abigail, we are unaware of what he is trying to obtain from her. However, as we listen to the conversation, we begin to learn more about his intentions. We learn that Abigail was seen dancing naked in the forest with Parris's daughter, Becky. Becky is now unable to speak or wake up, and people have begun to talk about witchcraft.

Parris is trying to learn what really happened that night between the girls. He is also intent on getting a truthful response because he is concerned about witchcraft, and about damaging his reputation. Parris is worried about the explanation that he will give to everyone in town. He asks Abigail: "And what shall I say to them? That my daughter and my niece I discovered dancing like heathen in the forest?"
