"By the waters of Babylon", originally published on July 1937 as "The Place of the Gods", is a story written by Stephen Vincent Benét.

The main plot takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. The main character and narrator is John, son of a priest. Priests, were the only one able to manipulate the metal from "God's home", referred to as "Dead Places".

John decides to investigate those places, claiming to bark on a spiritual trip,  reason why his father allowed him to go. During his journey, John realizes that the so-called "Gods", were human who succumbed to their own poorly managed knowledge. As he returns home, he shares his thoughts with his father, who strictly tells him to stay silent, as too much information can be harming to the people.

Drawing a parallelism between the story and the author's context, it is clear that he is referring to the aftermath of nuclear weapons. Also, by the time the text was written, there was no public knowledge of them. This can be found in the text when the author lets the reader know that only priests could handle metal from the Gods, alluring to how little people could access this information. Later on, it's more evident when John gets reprimanded.
