If i came across a unfamiliar word what should i do to figure it out?

You should look it up in a dictionary

Use context clues. The more familair you become at doing this,the easier it is for you to rapidly increase your vocabulary. Using a dictionary is fine as well,but you tend to look for answers rather practicing your learning abIlity. Whichever works best for you.
