Roman military had plenty of equipment so that every soldier was well-equipped. For protection, the most important gear was body armor of a soldier.  It a soldier from injuries by weapons such as protected javelins, spears, arrows, swords and daggers. There was a lorica segmentata which was an armor cuirass. It included acassis which was a helmet, a balteus which was a belt, tunica which was a tunic, a baltea which were dangly straps and caligae which were armies sandals. A scutum was a shield and a focale was a scarf. Those were Roman terms for the equipment.
Roman soldiers could march 20 miles a day carrying all of their equipment and armor. They must be very strong in order to do so. Their war armor was made of strips of leather and iron but their helmet was made out of metal.
