To the ewell family tom robinson is a disgust and they want nothing for him then to be sent to death. this is a completely different view from the author which describes him as nice and soft-spoken. it shows you how the time period changes how people react to certain things, since white people were seen as superior to other races the ewells thought they are more valuable than his life. also the ewells say that tom raped mayella when tom didn't because he is crippled on one side bob actually attacked mayella. for example in the text "  "mr ewells face grew scarlett. he stood up pointed his finger at tom robinson. i seen that (explicit) yonder ruttin on my mayella." "atticus tries to establish that mayella was never attacked at all by having  ewell demonstrate that he is left handed." those are how tom is characterized by the ewells. "there's no motivation for his sudden attack on mayella—it's just assumed that any african-american man would (explicit) any white woman, given the chance." that quote is the authors characterization. clearly they are very different.
