The “sky crane” was a novel solution to the problem of landing the 2000 lb Curiosity rover on the surface of Mars. Curiosity hangs from the descent stage by 60-ft long nylon tethers (Figure 1 (a)).
The descent stage, weighing 1500 lb, uses its thrusters to hover as the rover is lowered to the
surface. Thus, the rover behaves like a pendulum whose base is moving horizontally. The side
thruster force is not constant but is controlled to keep the descent stage from deviating left or right
from the desired vertical path.
Such a control system effectively acts like a spring and a damper, as shown in Figure 1 (b). The
rover mass is mr

, the descent stage mass is md, and the net horizontal component of the thruster
forces is f = kx + cẋ. Among other simplifications, this model neglects vertical motion and any
rotational motion.
Derive the equations of motion of the system in terms of the angle θ and the displacement x,
using: (5+5)
a) Hamiltonian (mechanical energy) Method
b) Lagrangian Method

Awall of 0.5m thickness is to be constructed from a material which has average thermal conductivity of 1.4 w/mk. the wall is to be insulated with a material having an average thermal conductivity of 0.35 w/mk so that heat loss per square meter shall not exceed 1450 w. assume inner wall surface temperature of 1200°c and outer surface temperature of the insulation to be 15°c. calculate the thickness of insulation required.

An engine, weighing 3000 n, is supported on a pedestal mount. it has been observed that the engine induces vibration into the surrounding area through its pedestal at the maximum operating speed. determine the stiffness of the dynamic vibration absorber spring in (n/m) that will reduce the vibration when mounted on the pedestal. the magnitude of the exciting force is 250 n, and the amplitude of motion of the auxiliary mass is to be limited to 2 mm note: in this question type-in right numbers, no decimals, no fractions, no unit. approximate to right number if needed
