A scaffold can be used to support growth of new bone tissue for patients who have suffered an injury to part of their bone. The scaffold is placed on or near damaged bone, so that new bone tissue can grow on the scaffold and eventually connect with healthy bone. Over time, scientists have designed scaffolds using the three materials shown in the table.
Material Advantage Disadvantage
metal strong can become
toxic over time
ceramic binds well with
living bone
brittle
collagen flexibile
low strength
Given the advantages and disadvantages of each material, a scientist wants to combine materials from the table to create a scaffold that will attach to the surrounding bone, is flexible, and will not cause the patient to become sick. Which materials should the scientist use in her scaffold design?
