A falling-head permeability test was performed on a soil sample 97-mm in diameter and 20-mm long. The stand pipe had an inside diameter of 6.0 mm. The water level in the bath surrounding the sample was 120 mm above the laboratory counter top and the water level in the standpipe fell from a height of 510 mm to 261 mm above the counter top in 46 hours and 35 minutes. Compute the hydraulic conductivity of the soil sample. Does the result seem reasonable

Amass of 1.5 kg of air at 120 kpa and 24°c is contained in a gas-tight, frictionless piston-cylinder device. the air is now compressed to a final pressure of 720 kpa. during the process, heat is transferred from the air such that the temperature inside the cylinder remains constant. calculate the boundary work input during this process.

Awall of 0.5m thickness is to be constructed from a material which has average thermal conductivity of 1.4 w/mk. the wall is to be insulated with a material having an average thermal conductivity of 0.35 w/mk so that heat loss per square meter shall not exceed 1450 w. assume inner wall surface temperature of 1200°c and outer surface temperature of the insulation to be 15°c. calculate the thickness of insulation required.
