A lake has a surface area of 1.00 x 10^8 m2. Phosphorus enters the lake from a discharge pipe out of a sewage treatment plant. This effluent has a flow rate of 1 m3/s and the phosphorus concentration is 2.0 mg/L. There is also a clean river with flow rate 50.0 m3/s into the lake (the water level of the lake is steady, so presumably there is enough outflow to equal the inflow of water). The phosphorus settling rate is 10.0 m/yr. a. What is the steady-state (or average) phosphorus concentration in the lake?
b. By what percentage must the sewage treatment plant reduce the concentration of phosphorus in its discharge to keep the lake below the eutrophication limit?

Two flowing streams of argon gas are adiabatically mixed to form a single flow/stream. one stream is 1.5 kg/s at 400 kpa and 200 c while the second stream is 2kg/s at 500 kpa and 100 ? . it is stated that the exit state of the mixed single flow of argon gas is 150 c and 300 kpa. assuming there is no work output or input during the mixing process, does this process violate either the first or the second law or both? explain and state all your assumptions.

A2-m rigid tank initially contains saturated water vapor at 100 kpa. the tank is connected to a supply line through a valve. steam is flowing in the supply line at 600 kpa and 300 c. the valve is opened, and steam is allowed to enter the tank until the pressure in the tank reaches the line pressure, at which point the valve is closed. a thermometer placed in the tank indicates that the temperature at the final state is 200°c. determine (a) the mass of steam that has entered the tank (b) the amount of heat transfer.
