Finite element programs generally have the option to look at all the stress variants, e. g. von Mises, Tresca, max principle, etc. When determining the factor of safety for a part, give a material where the von Mises stress would be the most useful stress variant to look at. Give a material where the max principle stress would be most useful. Why would you use one or the other?
