A nuclear power plant located on the seashore of an arid country sells electricity to the grid during the day (from 6 AM to 8 PM) and heat and electricity to a seawater desalination plant at night. In the day-time mode, the plant employs a simple Rankine cycle with overall efficiency of 40%, while the condenser heat rejection (Qout) is wasted. During the night, the waste heat from the plant is sold to the desalination plant as a heat input to their process. The reactor thermal power output which is the input heat to the Rankine cycle is 500 MW, constant day and night. The enthalpy of liquid water entering the boiler is 175 kJ/kg while the vapor exiting the boiler has 2772 kJ/kg enthalpy. The nuclear power plant operates at 80% capacity factor. Assume that electricity is sold at 8 ¢/kWh during the day and 2 ¢/kWh at night. Heat to the desalination plant is sold at 0.2 ¢/MJ. (a) Calculate the total revenues ($) generated by the plant in one day (24-hour). (10 points)
