G In the previous lesson, we talked about the "Standard Normal Distribution", where the mean is always 0 and the standard deviation is always 1. In real life "normal situations", the mean is not 0 and the standard deviation is not 1. (see below for examples) This lesson we begin talking about general normal probability distributions that have means other than 0 and standard deviations other than 1. The goal with this discussion is simply to come up with a situation that would result in a normal probability distribution. To do this, think of a situation that has a mean and the further you get from that mean, the less likely it is to occur (think bell-shaped) Once you come up with a situation, tell us why you think this type of distribution is called "Normal". Here are a couple examples that may result in a normal distribution: Men's heights in the US have a mean height (maybe 67 in.) and the further a height is from that mean, the less likely it would be to randomly pick someone with that height. I fill my coffee cup up each day with 12oz, give or take a little. So the mean is 12oz and the further a number of oz. is from that mean, the less likely it is that I would fill my cup up to that level.
