A steel (E=30x106 psi, =0.292) bar is 10" long and has a square cross-section 2" on a side. It is loaded in axial compression with uniformly distributed end loads of 120,000 pounds. (a) Determine the change in the bar's length, section side, and section diagonal. (b) If the bar is put into a square hole exactly 2" on a side in a body of infinite rigidity and then loaded with the same load, find the change in bar length and the contact pressure along the bar sides. Consider the interface between the bar and the rigid material to be frictionless. (c) Calculate the % change in density due to deformation for parts (a.) and (b.).
