Consider a stream of pure carbon monoxide at 300 bar and 150 K. We would like to liquefy as great a fraction as possible at 1 bar. One suggestion has been to expand this high-pressure fluid across a Joule-Thompson valve and take what liquid is formed. What would be the fraction liquefied for this method of operation? What entropy is generated per mole processed? Use the Peng-Robinson equation. Provide numerical answers. Be sure to specify your reference state. (Assume Cp-29 J/mol-K for a quick calculation.) (ANS. 32% liquefied)

Air is to be cooled in the evaporator section of a refrigerator by passing it over a bank of 0.8-cm-outer-diameter and 0.4-m-long tubes inside which the refrigerant is evaporating at -20°c. air approaches the tube bank in the normal direction at 0°c and 1 atm with a mean velocity of 4 m/s. the tubes are arranged in-line with longitudinal and transverse pitches of sl- st 1.5 cm. there are 30 rows in the flow direction with 15 tubes in each row. determine (a) the refrigeration capacity of this system and (b) pressure drop across the tube bank. evaluate the air properties at an assumed mean temperature of -5°c and 1 atm. is this a good assumption?

Water vapor initially at 10 bar and 400 °c is contained within a piston-cylinder assembly. the water lost heat to the surrounding according to isochoric (iso-volumetric) process until its temperature is 150 °c. the water is then condensed isothermally to saturated liquid. for the water as a system, calculate the work in kj/kg
