Consider a column of length 5 meters standing vertically up on the floor. Treat the column as a 1-D structure and ignore its weight. The super- structure placed on the top of the column applies a weight of 1kN along the center line (a vertical line passing through the centroids of the cross sections) of this column. Assume that the column has a built-in (fixed) support to the ground. The material testing performed in the laboratory shows that the column could shrink by 2% for a 100N compressive internal for ce. (a) Draw the free-body diagram of the column. Identify, body, boundary, displacement prescribed boundary, and force prescribed boundary. Calculate the reaction forces at the support considering the global equilibrium of the column. (b) Determine the internal force of a material section at a height of 2.5 meters from the bottom of the column. If you choose a material point at a different location is the intern al force going to be different? (c) Determine the deformation of a material section located at 2.5 meters from the bottom (d) Estimate the displacement at four locations of the column; 1) at the base, 2) 1/3rd the height of the column from the base, 3) 2/3rd the height of the column from the base, and 4) the top of the column. (Displacement is the actual motion of the location) (e) Calculate the deflection of 1) the bottom half of the column, 2) the top half of the column and 3) the whole column.

Two flowing streams of argon gas are adiabatically mixed to form a single flow/stream. one stream is 1.5 kg/s at 400 kpa and 200 c while the second stream is 2kg/s at 500 kpa and 100 ? . it is stated that the exit state of the mixed single flow of argon gas is 150 c and 300 kpa. assuming there is no work output or input during the mixing process, does this process violate either the first or the second law or both? explain and state all your assumptions.

Asingle-geared blanking press has a stroke of 200 mm and a rated capacity of 320 kn. a cam driven ram is assumed to be capable of delivering the full press load at constant force during the last 15 percent of a constant-velocity stroke. the camshaft has an average speed of 90 rev/min and is geared to the flywheel shaft at a 6: 1 ratio. the total work done is to include an allowance of 16 percent for friction a) estimate the maximum energy fluctuation b) find the rim weight for an effective diameter of 1.2 m and a coefficient of speed fluctuation of 0.10
