Pumped-storage hydroelectricity (PSH) is a fancy term for a method used by electric power systems to store excess power generated during low-demand periods so that it can be sold at later point, when demand is high. In this process, surplus power during off-peak times is used to run pumps which move water from a low elevation to a reservoir at a higher elevation. At one hydroelectric facility, a pump provides 30 kW of shaft power and moves 0.03 m3/s of water from a reservoir at the bottom of the dam to another reservoir that is 150 feet above. The water in both reservoirs can be considered as "still water" (no velocity components)
(a) Draw a sketch for the system and enclose the pump and both reservoirs in a control volume. Using arrows, indicate the transfers of energy both in to and out of the control volume. Identify and label each type of energy that is transferred across the boundary
(b) Determine the mechanical power (in kW) that is converted to thermal energy during this process.
