where kj is the jam density kc and is the critical density at which the traffic reaches maximum flow (the units of flow, density, and speed in the above equationare veh/hour, veh/mile and mile/hour). a traffic engineer took a measurement of the spacing when traffic is at a standstill and found it is 17.6 ft:
