Acircular cylinder of wall thickness 10 mm and internal diameter 200 mm is subjected to a constant internal pressure of 15 mpa. if the cylinder has closed ends, determine how much (a) axial tensile load, and (b) axial compressive load can be applied to the cylinder before yielding commences according to tresca's maximum shear stress criterion. the yield stress of the material in simple tension is 240 mpa. treat the cylinder as a thin-walled vessel. sketch the plane stress yield locus for the tresca criterion and show the two points representing the cases above. note: the axial stress is one of the stresses that governs the failure.
