During arc welding of aluminum, molten metal droplets are ejected. some of these droplets are hot enough to ignite and form sparks. most droplets are ejected at lower temperatures and simply cool down. a molten droplet has a diameter of 0.5 mm and is initially at ti=1600 °k with a velocity of 1 m/s. assuming a combined radiation-convection heat transfer coefficient of 20 w/m2 . °k, estimate the rate of cooling (dt/dt) for the droplet in air at t=20 °c. use the following properties for liquid aluminum at 1600 °k: density= 2100 kg/m3, c=1100 j/kg. °k., k=200 w/m. °k.

Awall of 0.5m thickness is to be constructed from a material which has average thermal conductivity of 1.4 w/mk. the wall is to be insulated with a material having an average thermal conductivity of 0.35 w/mk so that heat loss per square meter shall not exceed 1450 w. assume inner wall surface temperature of 1200°c and outer surface temperature of the insulation to be 15°c. calculate the thickness of insulation required.
