Consider an electrically heated melting furnace in the shape of a truncated cone with a height of 7.5m and a base diameter of 5m. at the top of the furnace is an opening with diameter 2.5m. is proposed to place a disk-shaped covering with hole diameter 1.5m to reduce energy losses while still allowing for the charging of materials to keep the furnace in continuous operation. (i) determine the power required to opcrate the furnace such that, when cmpty (i. e under preheat), the surface temperatures of the conical sides are at 1000°c and the surface temperature of the base is50°c. the ambient temperature at the top of the furnace is 300°c. (2)-calculate the percent reduction in energy if the covering is used, assuming the same ambient temperature as that given above.
