Cell Phone
The invention of cell phones occurred before the 20th century, but the major improvements were more prevalent in modern day.
The cell phone allows us to quickly contact any one we know at any time.
Modern cell phones feature internet access, video conferencing, e-mail, and almost anything a computer can do.
E-mail
E-mail has been an important mean of communication in the last decade.
E-mail allows people to communicate over the internet, share photos, documents, programs, etc.
More environmentally friendly than sending a letter.
However, E-mail is losing popularity with more convenient ways of communicating such as text messaging or instant messaging.
Education
Communication technology has changed learning in the 21st century.
Poster boards are now being replaced by multimedia presentation tools such as this one or PowerPoint.
Technology has transformed the audience from teachers and peers to the world due to blogging and social networks.
Three-ring binders are being replaced by tablets and online binders such as LiveBinders.
Web-based research is replacing research done in the library.
Interactive textbooks with online websites allow students to interpret the material better.
Internet
The internet began as a private agency network funded by the U.S. Military.
The purpose was to distribute information between distant regions during the cold war.
The network opened up in 1969 and techies swarmed to it.
Tim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web, HTML, HTTP, and URLs between 1989 and 1991.
Telephone
The first telephone was invented in the late 19th century.
Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham l both invented devices to transmit speech. Both men visited the patent office within hours of each other, but Bell patented his telephone first and won a legal battle against Gray.
Telephones became popular throughout the 1900s with constant improvement.
Radio
James Clerk Maxwell established the radio-wave theorem in 1864.
The first radio station was KDKA in the 1920s.
Featured medium-wave frequencies.
The U.S. and Europe did not like the quality produced by medium-wave frequencies and shortwaves became popular as a result.
Began as a means of communication between military ships.
First form of mass-communication.
Entertainment found in radio shows before television.
Effects
The Radio was the first form of mass-communication which allowed news, entertainment, weather, and other media to be presented to many people at once. The Telephone made world communication personal because it allowed two people to have a personal conversation at a distance. The computer served communication by building the foundation for the internet. The internet is perhaps the most profound form of communication to date. It allows us to quickly, privately access a vast array of information.
Modern
20th Century
Television
Philo Taylor Farnsworth is credited with inventing the most direct link with the modern TV.
Scanned images with a beam of electrons.
Televisions gained household popularity through the 1930s and 40s.
Early TV was primitive; the first televised baseball game was shot by a single camera.
Computer
Konrad Zuse created the first freely programmable computer called the z1. He also created the "computer language" or programming language.
Many people at the time thought computers could only "compute" much like a calculator. However, computers have become essential to modern technology.
Tablets
The Tablet PC has been on a rise since the introduction of the Apple iPad in 2010.
The predecessor of the tablet PC was the PDA. Used for keeping a calendar, writing reminders, and a few applications.
The tablet PC is capable of doing almost anything a desktop can, but it is portable.
Desktop computers are becoming less popular.
Video Conferencing
Video conferencing uses webcams to connect people face-to-face over the internet.
Video conferencing allows large meetings to be held without travel.
Can be held if travel is impossible due to geographical restriction.
Personal use is becoming much more popular as a way to see a person who is distant from you.
Effects
Communication technologies have changed the 21st century greatly. 21st century technology is all about convenience. Technology such as cell phones, tablets, E-mail, and video conferencing allow us to communicate, meet face-to-face, exchange media, and access the internet anywhere. Perhaps the most impact of 21st century communication is in education. The classroom has completely evolved around with the modern technology.
Both the 20th and the 21st century have shown many inventions in communication technology. However, the 20th century inventions laid the building block for 21st century innovations. The 20th century technology was seen as complex at the time, but it was not put to use as well as modern technology.
