Is avira better than microsoft security essentials?

I have also been looking into this a while ago.

In a nutshell, the most noteworthy differences are:
- MSE is less prone to false positives.
- Avira has better virus scan customizations

Overall Avira has more options and utilities, while MSE have greater ease of use. If you have any need or prefer to have more control, Avira might be a better choice for you.
However, if you don't want to bother with customization and just want something that "just works", MSE is a fine option. :)
