Project: Building a Computer Now that you have learned about the major hardware components of computers, it is time to put that knowledge to good use. Believe it or not, not every business buys new computers that arrive already assembled. Sometimes, the company purchases components and asks someone from the IT or help desk team to build computers from scratch. This is your chance.

The new chief financial officer for your company will be starting next week and she or he needs a new computer. She or he does not have any special video or graphic needs, though she or he works extensively on the Internet and with multiple complex spreadsheets at one time.

Pull together a list of the major hardware components (input, output, memory, storage, etc.) you will need for the new computer. Be specific about size, speed, and capacity, and whenever possible include the brand and model name of the product (such as Intel© Core™ i5 Processor or AMD 990FX Chipset).

Digitally or on paper, draw a representation of the motherboard and indicate where each component goes. Indicate how the component is connected to the motherboard—via a socket, port, slot, etc.

Next, write a brief explanation of why you selected the products and brands you did. For example, did you select a certain motherboard because of the form factor? Or choose the memory chip because it works best for heavy spreadsheet users?

Also create a brief flowchart of the process of putting the computer together, starting with laying out all the components on the table and ending with screwing the computer case on.
