There are programs designed so that when hard copies of things such as receipts, business cards and recipes are scanned into a computer, items from those paper copies are represented electronically. In order for the program to understand the difference between a zip code and a phone number or between a price of an item and the total bill for the shopping trip, certain rules must be put into place.
