The movement of these plates causes formation of new rocks or destruction of previous rocks. The plates might collide with each other (convergence boundary), move away from each other (divergence boundary) or move past each other(transform boundary) .

The plates might be oceanic crust or continental crust. In a collision boundary where plates collide, depending on the buoyancy of the plates one may suduct, sinking to the aesthenosphere region causing an uprising of magma to the surface of the earth. when this semi liquid (magma) solidified on the surface of the earth, new rocks are formed known as igneous rocks.

In a divergence boundary where plates move away from each other the other end of the plates might sink into trenches thereby melting into the interior of the earth due to high temperature. Rocks sinks into trenches and are destroyed.
