1. Two chlorides of iron were prepared: one by addition of dry chlorine gas; the other by addition of dry hydrogen chloride gas. 4.5 g of iron reacted with chlorine gas to form 13.01 g of the
chloride. 2.8 g of the iron reacted with the hydrogen chloride to give 6.35 g of the other chloride.
(i) Calculate the mass of chlorine which combined with 2.8 g of iron in each compound.
(ii) Find the ratio of the different masses of chlorine that combined with the 2.8 g of iron.
(iii) Which of the laws of chemical combination is illustrated by the data obtained from the
experiment?
