Onmental Science Unit 3 Instructions:
Think about how some species are generalists and some are specialists. What if you changed one thing in an
ecosystem? How would these organisms respond?
Here is an example you can not use. Our area has Queensnakes. They only eat freshly molted crawfish. Now
that is a specialist! Our area also has Leopard frogs. They will eat anything that can fit in their mouth. They are
definitely generalists. If I removed crawfish from my pond how will these two species respond?
You will need specific examples from a real ecosystem. Respond to the following statements using complete
sentences.

1. (Sci 1.1) Ask a specific scientific question that addresses the relationships between generalists and
specialists when an environmental factor has changed in an ecosystem. The question must be testable
and you need to provide specific background information that supports your question.
2. (Sci 1.1) for Level 12 - Clarify how your question relates to an important issue in the field.
3. (Sci 1.1) for Level 12 - Provide a clear rationale for why your question is both important and interesting.
Choose ONE of the two options below:
4. Option 1 for Level 10 - (Sci 1.2) Create a hypothesis using an "if...then...because..." statement that
shows you have clear understanding about the relationships of the factors involved.
5. Option 2 for Level 12 - (Sci 1.2) Create a hypothesis using an "if...then...because..." statement that
predicts an outcome based on a model or theory, and provides an accurate depiction of the
relationships between variables. Provide detail on what the model or theory is.

A3.37-mg sample of protein was chemically digested to convert its nitrogen into ammonia and then diluted to 100.0 ml. then 10.0 ml of this solution was placed in a 50-ml volumetric flask and treated with 5 ml of phenol solution plus 2 ml of sodium hypochlorite solution. the sample was diluted to 50.0 ml, and the absorbance at 625 nm was measured in a 1.00-cm cuvette and found to be 0.486. for reference, a standard solution was prepared from 10.0 mg of nh4cl (molar mass = 53.49 grams/mole) dissolved in 1.00 l of water. then 10.0 ml of this standard was placed in a 50-ml volumetric flask, treated in the same manner as the unknown, and the absorbance found to be 0.323. finally, a reagent blank was prepared using distilled water in place of unknown, it was treated in the same manner as the unknown, and the absorbance found to be 0.076. calculate the weight percent of nitrogen in the protein.
