Sound waves cause molecules to vibrate and bump into one another. For sound to travel, there must be molecules which can be made to vibrate. The closer together the molecules are, the faster the sound is able to travel. This explains why answers:

A: sound travels faster in steel than in water.

B: sound travels faster in outer space than in air.

C: sound travels faster in air than in water.

D: sound travels faster in water than in steel.
