Task Lead bromide is an ionic substance that can be electrolysed to form lead and bromine. The equation for this is:

PbBr2(l) β†’ Pb(l) + Br2(g)

Design a poster that explains what happens when lead bromide, PbBr2, is electrolysed.

You should include diagrams to show what is happening to the ions that make up lead bromide, Pb2+ and Br–, before, during, and after electrolysis.

It is up to you how you set out your poster, but you must make sure that your poster provides answers to the following questions:

1 Why are ionic substances able to be electrolysed?

2 What are electrodes and what is an electrolyte?

3 Which electrode will the lead ions move to? Why?

4 Which electrode will the bromide ions move to? Why?

5 What happens at the electrodes? (Make sure you use the words reduction and oxidation in your answer to this question.)

6 What is formed at each electrode?
