How do you think the myths of earthquakes swallowing up people came about? Is there a geological phenomenon that does "swallow up people?

when earthquakes are ready strong the ground almost liquefies. There was a pirate trading post on an island and they experienced an earthquake so strong entire buildings were 'swallowed' by sand.
