If you were able to monitor the progress of this reaction via IR spectroscopy, describe what the spectra would look like as the reaction proceeds. (a) Explain how an IR spectrum of the starting material would look different than the product and (b) based on that, what would you expect the IR spectrum to look after the reaction is 50% complete? Assume that only vanillin and vanillyl alcohol show up in the IR spectrum.
