What the team of geologists were talking about is known as the continental drift. The term continental drift which was introduced in the 1500s by people like Abraham Ortelius was mot accepted because the reasons backing it were not sufficient enough. The work on Continental drift was also worked on by people like Charles Lyell, Alfred Russel and Wegener. The term continental shift is used by geologists and other scientists to explain the movement of continents over time. The movement of continents is actually the movement on tectonic plates.

Although the movement of continents has not been accepted generally in those times, there has been modern evidence to back it up such as the record on fossils found in in several continents which are similar.
