The 1st Amendment protects the people’s right to assembly and protest, as long as they do so peacefully. Demonstrators excercised thus right as part of the Occupy Wall Street movement that began in 2011 to protest social and economic inequalities in the U. S. yet, to date, more than 7,000 Occupy protesters have been arrested. Right-to-demonstrate cases, such as this one, raise many difficult questions.
