Aqueous lead (II) nitrate, Pb(NO3)2 undergoes a double displacement reaction with aqueous sodium chloride, NaCl, in which a precipitate forms. If the precipitate contains lead, write the balanced chemical equation for this reaction. Be sure to include the states of each of the reactants and products.

The balanced chemical equation for the reaction between aqueous lead(II) nitrate (Pb(NO₃)₂) and sodium chloride (NaCl) is:  

Pb(NO₃)₂(aq) + 2NaCl(aq) → PbCl₂(s) + 2NaNO₃(aq)

When Pb(NO₃)₂ reacts with NaCl, the following chemical reaction takes place:

To balance equation (1), we need to make sure that the number of each element is the same in the reactants and products.

We can see from equation (2) that there are two Na atoms in the reactants and one Na atom in the products, so we need to add a coefficient of 2 before NaNO₃.

Pb(NO₃)₂(aq) + 2NaCl(aq) → PbCl₂(s) + 2NaNO₃(aq)  (3)  

Equation (3) is balanced now.  

Therefore, the balanced chemical equation is:

Pb(NO₃)₂(aq) + 2NaCl(aq) → PbCl₂(s) + 2NaNO₃(aq)
