When a solid dissolves in water, heat may be evolved or absorbed. The heat of dissolution (dissolving) can be determined using a coffee cup calorimeter. In the laboratory a general chemistry student finds that when 1.71 g of CaCl2(s) are dissolved in 108.60 g of water, the temperature of the solution increases from 23.11 to 25.97 °C. The heat capacity of the calorimeter (sometimes referred to as the calorimeter constant) was determined in a separate experiment to be 1.57 J/°C. Based on the student's observation, calculate the enthalpy of dissolution of CaCl2(s) in kJ/mol. Assume the specific heat of the solution is equal to the specific heat of water. ΔHdissolution = -83.2 kJ/mol

Modern pennies are composed of zinc coated with copper. a student determines the mass of a penny to be 2.482 g and then makes several scratches in the copper coaling (to expose the underlying zinc). the student puts the scratched penny in hydrochloric acid, where the following reaction occurs between the zinc and the hcl (the copper remains undissolved): zn(s) + 2 hcl(aq) → h2(g) + zncl(aq)the student collects the hydrogen produced over water at 25 °c. the collected gas occupies a volume of 0.899 l at a total pressure of 79 j mmhg. calculate the percent zinc (by mass) in the penny. (assume that all the zn in the penny dissolves.)
