What is the period of growth and development in a cell's life cycle?

Interphase

Explanation:

Interphase is the period of growth and development in a cell's life cycle.  The cell spends the majority of the life cycle in this period.  The cell also makes copies of itself and prepares mitosis.  

You could kind of relate this to a human's childhood (This analogy is not at all accurate on a scientific basis.  I am just using this example to help you understand the concept.)  During childhood, you grow and develop skills that you will use as an adult.  Once you reach adulthood, you start applying the things you had and practiced from childhood in your adult life.  In the same way, interphase is a growing period for cells.  Once the mature, they do what they had developed themselves to do, which is to make copies of themselves.
