Jane, newly diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, returns to the office for a follow-up visit to check her glucose levels. Her blood sugar level is higher than when the diagnosis was first made. On questioning, Jane says that she has had a cold that has left her with a cough. She has been taking an over-the-counter (OTC) cough syrup for the past 4 days.

1. Could the elevated blood sugar level be a result of the OTC drug? Explain your answer.
