An electrolytic cell requires electrical energy from an external source to drive a non-spontaneous redox reaction. The external source (a power supply such as a battery) will force the electrons to go towards the negative electrode (in this case the cathode). Reduction still happens at the cathode and oxidation at the anode. The electron flow and the signs of the electrodes are reversed in an electrolytic cell. The anode is the positive electrode and the cathode the negative electrode in all electrolytic cells. Electrons travel through the wire from anode (+) to cathode (-). Consider the following general electrolytic cell: a. At which electrode does oxidation occur? b. At which electrode does reduction occur? c . At which electrode does elemental metal form? d. At which electrode are electrons being released by ions (in other words: where are electrons generated)? e. At which electrode are electrons entering the cell (in other words where are electrons going)?
