While attempting to determine the density of a solid by water-displacement, a student places the solid in a graduated cylinder that is partially filled with water. (The initial volume of water is accurately recorded). The solid, however, is not fully submerged. Nonetheless, the student simply records the final volume of the water as is. How does the carelessness of this student affect the calculation of density? (Assume the mass is accurately determined). Will the calculated density be greater than or less than the true value? Or will the result be unaffected and equal to the true value? Carefully explain.
