CO₂(g) ⇌ CO₂(aq) + H₂O(ℓ) ⇌ H₂CO₃(aq) + H₂O(ℓ) ⇌ H₃O⁺(aq) + HCO₃⁻(aq)

As more CO₂ is absorbed into the ocean, the seawater becomes more acidic.  

Coral, shellfish and some species of phytoplankton become less able to create their shells and skeletons from calcium carbonate.

However, jellyfish, plants, and some algae thrive in more acidic water.

There will be major changes in aquatic ecosystems as a result of ocean acidification.
