A sample of ice is heated continuously until it becomes a liquid, and then a gas. Its temperature is recorded throughout and a graph is constructed. During the transition from solid ice to liquid water the graph is flat indicating no increase in kinetic energy even though heat is still being added to the sample. What does this section represent?
