Cu2+ Mg2+ Mn2+ Ag+ Na+
Br- soluble soluble soluble insoluble soluble
CO32- soluble soluble soluble soluble soluble
Cl- soluble soluble soluble insoluble soluble
OH- soluble soluble soluble soluble soluble
NO3 - soluble soluble soluble soluble soluble
Notes and comments:
- Solutions containing carbonate ion are basic
- Solutions containing copper(II) ion and manganese (II) ion may be acidic
- Litmus paper can be used to determine whether or not a solution is acidic or basic
- Solid managanese(II) hydroxide is light brown
- Solid silver oxide is brown-black in color, and it forms in place of silver hydroxide
- Solid silver bromide is cream to light yellow

Each unknown set of seven solutions consists of six salt solutions plus a solution of HCl. Each salt solution contains a pair of ions from the above list. All ions are used, and some are present in more than one solution.

1.) From looking at the table how many salts can be made from the listed ions? can solutions of all these salts be made? can any salts be eliminated from consideration as an unknown? which ones? why?

2.) Which cation-anion combinations (salts) precipitate from solution on mixing?

3.) Which ions, if any, can be detected by a visual inspection of the seven solutions?

4.) What other solutions, if any, besides those containing the carbonate ion are basic?
