Dispersants

Dispersants are generally detergents or surfactants that help dissolve the oil stain in smaller drops. They remove oil from the water surface, making it enter and into the water column, increasing the speed of biological degradation.  These dispersants, by removing oil from the water surface, protect birds, marine mammals, turtles and sensitive coasts. Chemical dispersants do not sink oil leaving it suspended in the water column. Dispersants should be avoided in shallow coastal waters, mangroves, swamps, or waters over coral reefs and algae due to their possible toxicity.
