Many tasks in chemistry involve separating mixtures. for example, crude oil by itself has very few uses, but many important substances are separated from crude oil. in this investigation we will attempt to separate sand from salt water, and salt from water. if you do not have access to sand, you can use small pebbles or bbs.

these supplies are needed: salt, water, sand, a measuring cup, a balance, filter paper

1. measure 5 grams of salt and 10 grams of sand using the balance.

2. mix together the salt and sand.

3. add the salt and sand mixture to one half-cup of water.

4. stir the mixture.

5. filter the mixture.

6. dry the sand on the filter paper.

summarize your findings in a scientific report. include your hypothesis, observations, data, and conclusions. be sure to answer the questions below in your summary as well as including your findings.

where is the salt after you filter?

where is the sand?

how could you separate the salt and water?

what other mixtures could be separated in this way?

what did you find out from this investigation? be thoughtful in your answer.
