Why did mendel use a pea plant in his experiments

Mendel chose pea plants because they had easily observable traits that he could manipulate.

The plants also are able to self-fertilize and therefore the plants would remain genetically pure. Therefore, Mendel would be able to easily get pure lines of several generations.
Experimental cross pollination is also easily achievable in a pea plant.
