How can subsidence lead to the formation of sedimentary rock?

Subsidence is the opposite of uplift, that means it is the sinking of the earths surface over a long period of time. this  can led to the formation of depressions in the earth's surface that trap sediment eroded from elsewhere forming a sedimentary basin if near a river or other sedimentary source. as sediment is trapped, the weight of the accumulating sediment causes further subsidence and the basin deepens trapping more and more sediment. the weight of the overlying sediments, heating and pressure can convert the sediments into compacted sedimentary rock.
