In 2003, the first redesigned U. S. paper currency, the $20 bill, was issued by the U. S. government. Since then, the $50 was issued in 2004, the $10 was issued in 2006, and the $5 was issued in 2008 by the Department of the Treasury. A new $100 bill in 2013 completed the series, since the $1 and $2 bills will not be redesigned. If a person was to look at any redesigned bill, he or she would notice three major features. A security thread is embedded in the paper by the designers to help prevent counterfeiting. Subtle colors and color-shifting inks have been used both to discourage counterfeiters and to assist users in identifying the denominations. The third security measure that has been incorporated is the watermark. The watermark is part of the paper itself and can be seen from both sides of the bill. Although older bills maintain their value, they are withdrawn from circulation as they wear out, and they have then been shredded at the U. S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing. If a guest was to visit the bureau, he or she would be able to purchase various souvenirs containing shredded money. Required:
